The American A-3 organisation has existed since the 1920’s and originally concentrated on the dairy and egg processing industries. Since then it has widened its scope to cover other applications. For many years, authorisation to use the A-3 Symbol rested on a system of self-certification. This system changed in 2003, when the requirement for a third-party verification inspection was implemented for licensees and was completed for all standards by 2007 bringing it more in line with the requirements of EHEDG.
