Sludge Thickening in Wastewater Treatment
In industrial, municipal, and urban wastewater treatment, a significant amount of sewage sludge is generated at various stages of the process. This includes both primary sludge from preliminary clarification and secondary sludge from subsequent clarification. Sewage sludge contains a high proportion of water and biomass, such as bacteria, but also pollutants deposited during cleaning, including heavy metals. In industrial wastewater treatment, sludge thickening is a central process. Here, water is separated from the sludge through chemical and mechanical methods to maximally reduce the water content and achieve stable pollutant binding.
Chemicals, such as polymer solutions, are used for precipitation and flocculation of sludge to improve particle binding and optimize dewatering properties. This is followed by mechanical processes, such as chamber filter presses or screw presses, which significantly contribute to reducing the volume of sludge.
